Cartier – New York Mansion

The project was a complete renovation and alteration of the internal space of Cartier’s 50,000Sqft New York Mansion, so that the client would be able to seamlessly join the original 635 Fifth Avenue store together with the East 52nd Street Townhouse (Cartier’s corporate offices, situated next door) to create one continuous interior. The scope entailed the careful removal of unique and original finishes, the complete demolition of the internal space, including walls, floors, stairs and the roof, whilst preserving the façades of both buildings. The interior was then completely redesigned and a new roof-top entertaining area added. The original features and finishes that had been restored were reinstalled, with replicas being sourced for new areas.

CHP were the cost managers on the project, undertaking services from inception, through to construction to financial closeout. However, there was no project manager assigned and due to the scale of the job, its multiple stakeholders and the differing time zones (the Client was based in New York and Paris), the CHP team incorporated the Client PM role into its own. The project was completed on time and on budget owing to the level of quality and detail that the team provided. CHP have continued to work with the Cartier team and have now worked on a number of projects in the US portfolio of Cartier concept store upgrades.

As this was the New York flagship store, very little time was available for investigations prior to construction. Unknowns such as the amount of asbestos abatement or the level of structural engineering required to join the buildings together provided constant pressures on the budget and schedule.
